Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating
Treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) using Therapeutic® Botox® performed by Dr. Jean-François Tremblay, dermatologist dedicated to the practice of cosmetic dermatology, laser and cosmetic surgery at the MédIME clinic in Montreal.
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, explains Dr. Jean-François Tremblay, is a very bothersome condition that affects the quality of life of 3-5 % of Canadians. This disorder results in the over-production of sweat in everyday conditions. The most affected areas are the underarms, hands, feet, face, nape of the neck and scalp.
The first line of treatment for hyperhidrosis is antiperspirant. Stronger formulas are also available in drugstores (Drysol and Hydrosal). In the past, very invasive surgical techniques were sometimes used to treat this problem. Today, Therapeutic Botox is the most popular treatment for patients dealing with moderate or severe hyperhidrosis.
Therapeutic Botox is very effective and very safe when administered by a skilled doctor at the right dose. Only the treated area is affected and the perspiration process of other body areas continues to function as usual. The procedure takes just a few minutes and involves small injections of the substance in the area being treated. Most patients experience a drastic reduction in sweat production between 4 to 14 days after the injections. The effects last from 8 to 12 months on average.
