If you sweat too much, you may be suffering from hyperhidrosis, a real medical problem that can be treated. Did you know that neuromodulator injections can treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)? Learn more about this treatment available at Dermapure.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating is a very bothersome condition that affects the quality of life of 3-5 % of Canadians. This disorder results in the over-production of sweat in everyday conditions. The most affected areas are the underarms, hands, feet, face, nape (back of the neck) and scalp.

According to studies:

– Most people with the condition say that hyperhidrosis affects their self-confidence and harms their personal relationships.

– Hyperhidrosis has a very significant emotional and physical impact on most people who have it.

– 1 in 10 Canadians brings a change of clothes to work and avoids contact because of excessive sweating.

Types of hyperhidrosis

The forms of treatment depend on the type of hyperhidrosis. There are two types:

1- Primary hyperhidrosis (primary focal hyperhidrosis) affects the armpits, palms, feet and face. A dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system causes an overexcitation of the sweat glands, which then secrete more abundant perspiration.

2- Secondary hyperhidrosis (generalized hyperhidrosis) usually affects the whole body. It is caused by medication or another medical condition (menopause, metabolic or neurological disorders or infections).

Diagnosis of hyperhidrosis

A diagnosis by a specialist in excessive sweating will help you determine what form of treatment is best for you. Once secondary hyperhidrosis has been ruled out, a quick and easy way to assess primary hyperhidrosis is to measure the intensity of your sweating in terms of how it interferes with the performance of your daily activities. The Hyperhidrosis Intensity Scale (HIH) allows you to choose the statement that best reflects how you experience your sweating.

Treatment options

The good news is that a specialist in excessive sweating can find a solution to your problem. There is no one “right” treatment for hyperhidrosis.

The first line of treatment for hyperhidrosis is the use of topical antiperspirants that temporarily block the sweat ducts to prevent the escape of sweat. There are also more potent formulas that can be found in pharmacies such as Drysol and Hydrosal. In the past, invasive surgical techniques were sometimes performed to treat this problem. They are now used as a last resort for people with intense hyperhidrosis of the armpits, hands or head that do not respond to other treatments. Today, treatment with neuromodulator injections has become the treatment of choice for patients with moderate to severe hyperhidrosis.

Treating excessive sweating with neuromodulators

Therapeutic Botox is very effective and very safe when administered by a skilled doctor at the right dose. Only the treated area is affected, and the perspiration process of other body areas continues to function as usual. The procedure takes just a few minutes and involves small injections of the substance in the area being treated. Most patients experience a drastic reduction in sweat production between 4 to 14 days after the injections. The effects last from 8 to 12 months on average.
