Treatment of acne and enlarged pores
Treatment of acne, enlarged pores, oily skin and acne scars performed by Dr. Jean-François Tremblay, dermatologist dedicated to the practice of cosmetic dermatology, laser and cosmetic surgery at the MédIME clinic in Montreal.
What causes acne and oily skin?
“The problem with acne and oily skin,” explains Dr. Tremblay, “is that they are complex and affect a large number of individuals of all ages. Various factors can influence or cause acne such as genetics, the hormonal cycle, stress, environmental conditions and the use of skincare products (cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, etc.) that aren’t suited to your skin type.”
What treatments can help control acne?
Suitable skincare for your skin type:
The first thing to do is optimize your daily skincare routine. Simply using a cleanser for acne prone skin that’s suited to your own specific needs can make a big difference. Greasy, comedogenic moisturizers should be replaced with lighter, water-based lotions. The use of certain types of astringents and exfoliants can also help prevent blackheads and pimples from forming. A deep cleanse from time to time by one of MédIME’S medical estheticians can also provide full and fast results.
For moderate acne, prescription creams containing retinoic acid, benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics can offer gradual relief over a few weeks. For moderate to severe cases, antibiotics and isotretinoin (Accutane) are often needed to control the acne and prevent the formation of permanent scars.
Laser and photodynamic therapy treatments:
Laser and photodynamic therapy treatments are generally reserved for patients who have not responded to medical treatments (creams and drugs), or for whom there are certain contraindications or possible side effects with medications. Photodynamic therapy combines Levulan and blue light to reduce sebum production and better control oily skin and acne. Laser treatments are used to treat acne scars once the acne is under control.
How do we treat acne scars?
Scarring due to acne can manifest itself many different ways such as red spots, brown spots, dilated skin pores as well superficial dents or deeper hollows on the surface of the skin. Depending on the type of scars the patient suffers from, a combination of different techniques can be used to provide optimal results. Those techniques include laser therapy (Fractionnel Co2, eMatrix, Microneedling), restorative injection therapy, peeling as well as minor surgery.
